Estimation of percent imperviousness of urban basins using remote sensing data

Percent imperviousness is an important parameter in modelling urban rainfall-runoff processes. This parameter is usually determined using manual methods such as the random sampling method or conventional accounting method. In this study, two computerized methods of automatic extraction of percent imperviousness using high altitude remote sensing imagery are developed. These methods include the Laser Image Processing Scanner and the Video-Tape Camera system. Imperviousness is estimated directly in the former method while in the latter it is estimated as a function of the statistics of the responses on the emulsions of the imagery. The methods are applied to four urban basins and the percent imperviousness computed by these methods compare well with those obtained by the normally used manual methods. The study demonstrates that remote sensing imagery can be utilized to estimate accurately the percent imperviousness in less time than the manual methods. Estimation du pourcentage d'imperméabilité sur les bassins urbains par la télédétection RESUME Le pourcentage de zones imperméables est un paramètre important dans la mise en modèle des processus précipitations-écoulement dans les bassins urbains. Ce paramètre est déterminé habituellement en utilisant des méthodes manuelles telles que la méthode d'échantillonage au hasard ou la méthode du décompte conventionnelle. Dans cette étude on présente deux méthodes utilisant l'ordinateur qui extraient automatiquement le pourcentage d'imperméabilité à partir de l'imagerie de télédétection à haute altitude. Ces méthodes sont: le "Laser Image Processing Scanner" et le système "Video-Tape Camera". L'imperméabilité est estimée directement dans la première méthode alors que dans la seconde elle est estimée comme une fonction des caractéristiques statistiques des réponses des emulsions de l'imagerie. Les méthodes sont appliquées à quatre bassins versants urbains et les pourcentages d'imperméabilité qu'elles permettent de calculer sont en bon accord avec ceux que l'on obtient par les méthodes manuelles utilisées habituellement.
